Etudes

The Etudes page is designed to offer a comprehensive listing of all etudes, studies, exercises, scales and arpeggio publications, conceived for all age and technical levels. The listing covers all music styles, starting with the standard legacy of classical bass pedagogy and differentiating itself into the fields of concert pieces, bass technique, collective string and orchestra education, jazz pedagogy and the electric bass.

By evaluating the criteria for inclusion in this listing, it has become apparent that the terms Etude, Study, Exercise usually imply the same, or very similar type of technical material. Thus to make a distinction between the Etudes-Studies and the Technical Exercises in every single edition has presented itself as a difficult task. Perhaps some future study may address this distinction, yet for the purpose of this listing these are treated as equal. In the case of Capriccios an argument can be made that they already belong to a concert genre, yet since some bass compositions of this type belong equally to the realm of didactic, as well as concert repertoire, a differentiation was allowed within the separate headings for “Etudes – Concert & Solo” and “Etudes – with Piano.”

Moreover, in some manuals the difference between the “Etude-Study-Technical Exercise” and the “Method” genres was difficult to determine. Thus the basic criteria for demarcation were set as follows. If a manual’s primary purpose is the technical advancement of a certain level of accomplishment, it is classed here as an “Etude.” Yet, if a manual is primarily designed to serve as a didactic material for sequential teaching at any level, it is listed in the Methods page instead.

The wider criteria for inclusion in this listing consider also the ability of these pieces to be offered in the curricular examinations, although in many cases it was difficult to determine a true level and purpose of these works. A further study of this sub-genre would certainly be welcome in order to elucidate didactic and concert level of these pieces.

All etudes listed here have been initially conceived as the original works intended for other instruments, that may have originated either as didactic pieces or independent compositions. A challenge, however, has presented on how to classify these diverse prints, since on many editions the editor/arranger has been cited as the actual author, instead of a true one. The rule applied here is that you will always find the etudes cited by the original author first, while the name of the editor/arranger is cited in bold within the remainder of the citation. The title and the other edition data are always carefully preserved, and should serve you as a reliable guide in locating a desired publication.

Etudes – from a String Series set

Similar to the comparable listing created for the Methods page, you will find here the exercise (etude) manuals that are part of the String Series editions, which are designed mainly for elementary-high school string orchestras in the United States. While making this index, sometimes however it was difficult to differentiate between the actual method and an exercise book for a collective or solo string class. Thus in general, whenever the Library of Congress subject classification “Studies and Exercises” has been noted, it was an indicator that such work may belong here. Otherwise, a common sense was used to interpret the record and determine if the main intent of the publication was to offer a collective exercise for strings – and among them the bass – or to be more a type of a method. Any further research and inquiry in this interesting category of beginning bass pedagogy will be highly welcome.

Etudes – Jazz

The field of Jazz bass art is certainly different in its core didactic approach from the classical training, thus the perception of what is an exercise (or an etude) in jazz may differ too. Yet, since a great amount of bass exercise materials have been noted within the library records, this is the place where all of them will be listed. This Jazz “Etude” listing includes all technical exercises for jazz bass that are recognized as such and in addition also the transcriptions of solos which are often classified by libraries as “etudes”. Also, in many instances it was difficult to distinguish between a possible method structure or a purely exercise designed manuals, thus you may find here few citations that read “Method” although their content indicates more a type of a technical manual.
