Orchestration Manuals

Welcome to the Orchestration, Instrumentation & Composition Manuals page, a bibliographic reference tool designed to facilitate study of all period and modern editions that may feature double bass. The main focus of this bibliography are the period 19th and early 20th centuries’ manuals that may offer a direct link to an accessible coverage of double bass online. In that respect this listing’s goal is also to offer a tool that may help us understand the evolution of bass treatment among composers over time. The final goal of this bibliography however, is to gather all orchestration manuals up to the present time and index, if not link, all their sections with bass coverage.

During the process of gathering this bibliography it has become apparent that even with the best cataloging practices of our modern libraries it is very difficult, and sometime even impossible, to ascertain an exact order of editions and subsequent translations of certain manuals. Due to a rather liberal understanding of copyright and proprietary issues in 19th century prints, the very authorship of some works was often blurred or very liberally assumed. Thus the borrowing of text and ideas was common, and likewise the conceptions and misconceptions presented in these works were then copied without much further investigation further, sometime for decades in future.

With many older editions in is also not clear whether subsequent issues were actual modified editions, or just the reprints with or without any changes. All variations of such practices are noted and yet for the sake of this bibliography, whenever a new edition was marked as such, it was indicated in the record as such too. Also, the dating of publications in the first half of 19th century was sometime inconsistent or was missing altogether and needed to be deducted through secondary sources. With some of those editions you will find the year of publication in brackets,  that is how the year was estimated or deducted in the library record and that is how it is presented here as well.

The whole genre of composition, orchestration and instrumentation manuals as we perceive them today may have started with J. G. Albrechstberger with his 1790 Gründliche Anweisung Zur Composition. Prior to that time all discussion of bass in orchestra was relegated to variously profiled treatises that are already covered at the ABP Treatises page. For the sake of convenience Albrechstberger’s work is the only one cited both here and in the Treatises page, since it may be perceived to belong to both categories. Otherwise, it is hoped that a lead index with Name, Chronology and Location hierarchies may offer an efficient glance of what was published and when, as in many instances these orchestration books were translated and disseminated broadly, thus extending the original thoughts of a writer from one culture to the other, sometime even over continents.
