Methods

Welcome to the Double Bass Methods, a reference source designed to answer all inquiries in the field of bass methodology. Listed you will find the works that fit the following two criteria. First, the publication had to be designed as a manual intended to teach someone how to play a double bass though a defined sequence of instruction steps. Thus all etudes, studies and other exercise compilations that may deceivingly look as a “method”, have been safely excluded. Second, a method was defined through its very title, such as Method, School, Tutor or similar, in any language (Metodo, Méthode, Schule, Scole, Szkoła, Škola, Lehrgang). Period treatises created before the late 18^th and early 19^th century have been excluded, since most of them do not present a teaching sequence required of modern methods.

The actual search and compilation of the titles was based primarily on the extant library records – not the music publisher catalogs, or the bass curricular listings. By and large, the libraries world-wide now offer a true cross section of all the extant method materials, thus the older method listings have been referenced only for works not held in the libraries. The form of bibliographic citation follows a modified MLA (Modern Language Association) pattern of a bibliographic list type, and also includes all the editions of a particular work where applicable. Furthermore, in order to facilitate access to the specific profiles of Jazz and Electric Bass methods, several additional sub categories have been created. Lastly, all the items with multiple authorship or multiple classifications were duly cross-referenced for your comfort and convenience.

However, due to the evolving publishing standards some of them were difficult to date, thus their chronology and precise place of origin remain to be researched more thoroughly in the future. Wenzel Hause may rightly be considered as a father of modern bass pedagogy, and it is certainly of importance to understand his work in all the lands he was active during his lifetime which includes not only his native Bohemia, yet also France and the other European countries.

The double bass section starts with chapter Kurze Anweisung des Violons mit 3. 4. und 5. Saiten untershiedlicher Stimmungen (A Brief Instruction for the Violon with 3, 4 and 5 Strings in Different Tunings) at page 49. This chapter presents some six different tunings for double bass (Violone) and each is accompanied with a brief exercise. Some of these tunings are well known as historical tunings, yet some are not and may have been regional variants. It is also of interest to note a High C tuning in a 5 string variant (§ 4.), which just may be the first instance of such a tuning mentioned in the methods literature.
