Term Dictionaries

Welcome to Music Term Dictionaries or Dictionaries of Musical Terms page, a presentation conceived to list all music dictionaries containing the bass related terms. This presentation setup differs from the one in Biographical Music Dictionaries in style, since all the relevant bass terms are already indexed for your convenience here. You may note that many Biographical Dictionaries are duplicated on this page since they also offer the musical terms and thus belong in this listing. These dictionaries are also marked in the Alphabetical Index with small “btd” sign indicating the Biographical and Term Dictionary.

The Term Dictionaries page is by far the largest Dictionaries page of all presented at ABP and will present the reader with the quantity and quality of entries that vary considerably by author, publisher and location. Some of those are unique, and from the research point quite valuable too. Yet, one will also encounter many borrowings, modifications and replications of related entries that may remain behind the original edition by decades sometime. Similarly to our modern online (mal)practices, in the periods that precede us it was on occasion much easier to copy, or appropriate the work of the others, than to compile the material on your own. The majority of entries however, will bear a witness to a good faith of their authors in presenting a factual state of instruments in their time. Yet please, don’t forget a good humor and a notion that for many of these fine gentlemen editors, a perception of period bass instruments may not have been of any higher value than to our modern lexicographers today.

In respect to documentation principles applied here, with many entries you will find relevant comments in brackets that intend to clarify particular idiosyncrasies, or offer other pertinent observation. Likewise, where several bass entries are cited, the most important ones will commonly be marked by a red dot ( ), since in many instances, those other entries are either too short, somewhat irrelevant, or they simply point to the main entry. In respect to differing font types, all the citations will try to follow the appearance the original text font, so that any additional context may be preserved. Thus some entries will contain now archaic period s – ſ , or German double s – ß, that actually may even help in dating certain 18th century prints. Many German entries from 18th and 19th century dictionaries have been printed in Gothic font as well, and where it could be of assistance (a difficult to read scan, or an unintelligible text), a small translation of the main points is provided for the sake of convenience. Everything else offered here should be self explanatory and ready to serve your search and research interests.

Note 1. Geographical listing designates the place of publication, which in some instances may differ from the main residence of the author. The listing of cities however may still offer good reference on types of bass instruments used in a particular region at the time of publication.

Note 2. A red-violet btd refers to “Biographical and Term Dictionary” and implies the content that offers both biographies of bassists, composers and other musicians, as well as musical terms, and among them the period designations of various bass instruments.

[ A period curiosity of this dictionary-manual is that it also offers a Latin reprint of a famous Tincotoris’ Terminorum Musicae Diffinitorium (1494), considered as the very first music dictionary of our time, which is then followed by a number of local 19th c. advertisements. So there is a little of everything from all periods, and for all interests in this book. ]

Parts, p. 309 – Internet Archive

Rousseau in Warring’s translation does not offer any specific reference to any kind of low stringed bass instruments. The only relevant reference comes from the “Part” chapter where he discusses the ranges of typical vocal and instrumental parts. In that section a typical instrumetnal “Bass” part range is presented, and it coincidentally spans the ambitus of a Violoncello, (examples p. 310).

Viol, p. 461 – Internet Archive

Explains a French traditon of doubling the bass part, vs. Italian that does not, yet which in turn perfoms the part “on the octave.” No speciffic instruments are mentioned nor the types of compositions or circumstances of perfomances, thus such an explanation needs further corroboration for all details to become clear.

The standard system of tables contained in French editions is not presented here.
