Biographical Dict.

Welcome to Music Biographical Dictionaries, a presentation conceived to list all music dictionaries with biographical entries of period bassists, composers and other pertinent musicians. The goal is to eventually list all dictionaries of this profile, while the current listing offers almost all of dictionaries printed prior to online copyright-restriction year. The specific references to individual bass players were not attempted here though, as there simply would be too many of them to include in this index. The How to Search for Bass Players section however will explain in detail how to search effectively for all possible bassists’ entries in these volumes.

In general, the majority of these dictionaries have never been systematically explored for extant entries on bass players and/or composers of relevance to the bass field. In technical terms, the actual hand browsing of so many volumes would have taken many years to accomplish. Likewise, only the very few specialist libraries would even have all these volumes located together. With an online access and a keyword search tools though, an opportunity to explore these volumes has become an attainable reality that could certainly enhance our knowledge on many period bassists. Everything else presented on the page should be self explanatory and ready to serve your search and research interests.

Slonimsky, Nicolas (1894-1995) – Info

The Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians conceived by Theodore Baker in 1900, has been substantially revised and enlarged by Nicolas Slonimsky starting with the 5th edition. The extent of revision was such that the authorship may be considered mostly Slonsimsky’s. Thus to avoid possible confusion, the 5th edition of Baker’s Dictionary and subsequently all the later editions are cited under both Baker and Slonimsky heading.

How to Search for Bass Players

The principle in all online keyword searches is the same: as long as the scan offers a good quality image for Optical Character Recognition, one will be able to match a search query with all extant words in the dictionary. The challenge is only how to identify the proper term applied to bassists within a certain period and area, and for that reason we offer a small guide here.  You will note that every major European language has its own set of names for a bassist, so these terms should be used while searching publications in a particular language.

  • English search: “Double Bassist” ; “Bassist” ;  “Contrabassist” or “Violonist” / singular: “Double Bass” ; “Bass” ; “Contrabass” ; “Violon” ; “Violone”
  • German search: “Violonist” ; “Bassist” ; “Contrabassist” ; “Kontrabassist” / singular: “Violono” ; “Violone” ; “Bass” (although this one is very broad and will pick a lots of other bass entries) ; “Contrabass” ; “Kontrabass”
  • French search: “Contrebassiste” ; “Bassiste” / singular: “Contrebasse”  ; “Basse” also “Contrabasse”
  • Italian search: “Contrabbasista” ; “Contrabassista” ; “Bassista” ; “Violonista” / singular: “Contrabbasso” ;  “Contrabasso” ; “Violono” ; “Violone”
  • Spanish Search: “Contrabajista” ; “Contrabajo”
  • Portuguese Search: “Contrabaixista” ; “Baixista” ; “Contrabaix” ; “Contrabaixo”

In respect to how bassists were described in texts, unfortunately there is no rule on how a dictionary would approach the matter. Thus a bassist can be cited in text either as “Bassist John Doe” in which case a “bassist” search should be used, or as a “Double Bass player Joe Doe” in which case a “double bass” should be used. So a singular “double bass” will indeed pick the persons as well, when associated with them.

In respect to period sequence of terms used in dictionaries, the following chronological outline should offer a basic outline for searching older prints. The earliest term is Violone, and it is in use from late 17th century, till mid to late 19th century in Italian, German and even English prints. Contrabass(o) spans early to mid 19th century period in Germany and Italy, where it represents the main term for double bass. Note that in Italian prints it may contain one or two “b”s.  Kontrabass is generally used in Germa, other Central/Eastern European and also Nordic countries, from mid 19th century till today. For more specific wording of the term double bass in other languages, please refer to the listing of Wikipedia Bass Articles at the ABP General Encyclopaedias page. For a detailed overview of historical bass names, you may also consult the Terminology section of the ABP Treatises page.

Lastly, many of the German language dictionaries that feature the old ß in the print will automatically be recognized it as double s, so it may not be necessary to search with that particular letter in the Kontrabaßist or Kontrabaß queries. Should you wish to be sure however, you certainly may try them as well.
